Robert "Bob" Jelenic, an accountant and key member of the Toronto Sun's expansion team during the glory years, has died of cancer.
He was 58.
Bob was chairman and CEO of the Journal Register Corp. in the United States when he stepped down in 2007, two years after his cancer was diagnosed.
A Journal Register press release says Bob died last night night in Pennsylvania after a long bout with cancer.
"Jelenic was the architect and driving force behind JRC before stepping down in November of 2007 after 20 years with the Yardley, Pennsylvania-based corporation," the statement says.
The statement says Jelenic, an all-around good athlete known for his vivid personality, grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, and graduated from Laurentian University in Sudbury with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree.
"My 32 years in the newspaper industry have been extremely gratifying and rewarding," Bob said at the time of his resignation.
Bob is survived by his wife, Joy, and two children, a son, Lee, and a daughter, Laine.
Before his 20-year stay with Journal Register, Bob was a loyal Toronto Sun Publishing accountant-cum-general manager for 12 years. He was part of the A Team during the years of growth and expansion.

Bob is called the Sun's "golden boy" in Jean Sonmor's 1993 book, The Little Paper That Grew - Inside the Toronto Sun Publishing Corporation.
In the early 1990s, when reached by Sonmor, Jelenic spoke fondly of his years with the Sun chain, which included three turbulent years as general manager of the Houston Post.
"I think it's one of the best run news organizations in North America" the told Sonmor in 1992. "Every speech I give I mention that."

Bob's aunt, Anne Menican, worked at the Sun for years before retiring at Christmas in 2006.
