Lou Clancy new EIC

Updated
The Toronto Sun has a new editor-in-chief in Lou Clancy, but the face is familiar.

Glenn Garnett, who was both Toronto Sun editor in chief and Sun Media executive editor, announced in his final Inside the Sun blog posting his executive editor duties have grown substantially with the purchase of 54 Osprey Media newspapers.

So he has turned the EIC reins over to Lou, a Toronto-born news vet who began his media career as a copy boy at the Toronto Star. (See Tom Godfrey's story in the Sun.)

"I cannot think of a journalist more qualified for the role of Toronto Sun EIC than Lou Clancy, who took the reins today," Glenn said in his Monday posting. "The former Toronto Star ME, KW Record EIC and VP of Editorial for both Sun Media and Osprey is the perfect guy to take the paper where it needs to go. I'm looking forward to working with him again."

(Lou is yet another Osprey Media body now under Quebecor's wing. He was vice president, editorial, for Osprey. Other returning bodies from Osprey include Queen's Park reporter James Wallace and freelance hockey writer Scott Morrison.)

From all reports, Lou was a favourite with Sun employees while at the tabloid, so his return sounds like favourable news for a thinning newsroom in dire need of stability.

"I have enjoyed writing this blog, and sharing some of my experiences at the Toronto Sun with you," Glenn says in signing off as EIC and blogger.

Glenn doesn't say if Lou will be writing the Inside the Sun blog, which we came to enjoy during his 200 days as editor in chief.

When Glenn launched the blog, we thought it might be all puff pieces of little consequence to Sun employees, but he touched on controversial issues and posted interesting inside info.

Nice job, Glenn.

And welcome back, Lou. Here's hoping you can bolster the newsroom in numbers and morale.

Did this blogger ever thank you for not hiring me on as a Star reporter in 1974? Would have missed 19 great years at the Sun if you had put me on the payroll.
